Winter Work 2018 - Kestrels

Writer's picture: Vincent WrayVincent Wray

Staying on top of all the tasks on the farm keeps us pretty busy, replacing cameras that have failed, repairing cables gnawed through, fitting new systems to new and replacement boxes, repairing the older boxes, and giving them a good clean out, repaying nature for the treasure she opens our eyes to.

This winter we have been concentrating on the Kestrels, theres a few pair round Arglam farm but they failed to lay due to the bad weather. We fitted two new nests boxes fully rigged for monitoring remotely, the first box has replaced the one fitted over 15 years ago, it was full of Barn Owl pellets which had finally weighed it down enough.

The second box was reclaimed from the edge of the Tawny Wood, the pair that "Own" the wood were not going to tolerate any other bird on there patch, the first night we fitted it a few years back the Tawny was stood in the entrance flexing his muscles.

Allot of the boxes we have fitted get taken over by lazy squirrels, luckily we have the Rhodes family on our side and Catherine donated a large telegraph pole, perfect for mounting boxes.

We lashed the ladder on and roped the box up, a few large nails and a big hammer later...

The following day I set the remote recorder going for 48hours, the cast of characters as follows in order of appearance, Tree Sparrows, Blue Tits, one Tawny Owl who dropped in to size it out, then his partner came for a viewing, at sunrise the following bird showed her face...…..

Were hoping she manages to keep the box to herself and expand the local population around Holme-on-Spalding-Moor, East Yorkshire.
