Were lucky to have allot of Tawny Owls on the farm, at least three use the boxes weve put up, the rest are near the main dwellings of the farmers...lucky them, there very vocal at the moment!
Tawnys breed in March, have 1 clutch of 1-7 eggs, 28-30 incubation, 32-37 days to fledge. Weve been monitoring the boxes in a pine woodland for a while and its been empty till the 9th of March, so like the Little Owls from last year shes expecting on the 1st April.
Heres hoping all four make it. We will be watching them closely on our remote cctv and ill be updating the blog with any interesting sightings, unfortunately the sound is really bad as its been recording all the calls , hoots, ke-wick's and hoo-hoo-oooo with masses of feedback noise.
Adult Tawny's are 99% nocturnal , only hunting before sunset on rare occasions when theirs allot of hungry beaks to fill, the fledglings however love to have a wander around and branch during all hours.
The following clip shows the female tending to her four eggs. (2018)
and the Following clip shows the Female Owl eating one of the two cached rodents, at first shes seen feeding on a Juv Rat, she then moves the rat into the bottom left corner, then something moves under her wing...
