How to remotely wake up a panasonic lumix GH5 that has gone into power save mode ( sleep )

the only possible way to wake it up is with a physical 1/2 press / full press of the shutter button on the camera body.

But there's a "Hack" that involves using a gh5 battery grip , if you search amazon for this after market grip "DSTE DMW-BGGH5 DMW-BGGH5GK Vertical Battery Grip for Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH5" approx £40. Youll also need a 2.5mm stereo jack socket search for "2.5MM JACK SOCKET STEREO CHASSIS" approx £3

Also required are a soldering iron / solder / some miniature single core wire / a fine philips screw driver / a fine scalpel knife / thin side cutters / a drill @ drill bit.

Firstly remove the front row of screws in the bottom of the grip towards the front , then remove all the top screws, lift the flat top piece of plastic off and put to one side, next locate the shutter button on the grip ( its connected via 2 small screws ) gently pull the 2 ribbon cable out from the main grip to the switch assembly ,  flip the plastic clamp upwards from the ribbon cable and gently ease it out,  lift the whole switch assembly out.

When you disassemble the grip leave these screws in place

Now use a bit of tape to hold the switch assembly down to a solid surface to keep it steady while working on it,  solder 3 wires about 100mm long onto the switch as shown in the photo below.

1. is the switch common

2. is the shutter full press

3. is the shutter 1/2 press ( focus )

Drill a hole into the grips front section, there's a small flat area that's suitable see photo below for approx position, then push the 2.5mm socket through from the back and secure it with the knurled nut on the outside,  it helps to cut the rubber grip area around the socket about 3 mm larger with a scalpel blade so when you tighten the nut up it looks neat.

Next solder the wires from the switch assembly onto the socket as in photo above.

Reassemble and test using a canon wired eos shutter release as this uses a 2.5mm stereo jack. cable, you can now wake it up at anytime as long as the battery isn't flat and also you can use wireless triggers to wake it up from sleep.

I use mine in a remote video wildlife camera trap using a pir movement trigger setup hard wired with a auto switch on/off video light using camtraptions equipment.
